Each of the 28 letters belongs to one element. There are two readings, and the page shows both: the bars weigh how much of the name's value comes from each element, while the source's own rule counts letters — whichever element has most of them is the dominant one, and every ritual instruction on this site follows the count. Where the two readings disagree, that is said beside the result.
A name's element means most when set against another — the sources read the relation between two people, not one person in isolation. For that, use Compatibility. On its own, the useful part is the balance: an element entirely absent says more than the dominant one.
These are traditional practices about which scholars genuinely differ, and some hold parts of them to be impermissible. This site takes no position on that question and is not a substitute for a qualified scholar. Use your own judgement. Terms.
